As Dallas’ first masjid, Masjid Al-Islam has been entrenched in serving the community of South Dallas since the 1960s. The Masjid has been providing the basic necessities of life, including meals and clothing, to those in need. While the Masjid’s efforts and impact have grown tremendously, its space remains the same humble abode it acquired in 1979, a building that is out of code and falling apart with each passing day. Future Masjid Plan
• The turbulence in the general society, war, assassinations, protests, racial unrest, and other ails begin to fracture a solid Islamic culture
• Early 1970s - Temple #48 is moved to South Dallas while leaders such as Isaiah Karriem, Yusuf Shah,
and Lee G. Bilal aid the efforts to hold the community together and keep the dawah going
• 1975 - Elijah Muhammad passes and is succeeded by his son Wallace Deen Muhammad, who leads the newly
independent Masjid Al-Islam into orthodox or Sunni Islam, making it the oldest masjid in Dallas county
with its first combined Eid ul-Fitr in a backyard in Grand Prairie, TX
• 1979 - Masjid Al-Islam moves its location to 2604 S. Harwood St
• 1992 – Dallas Masjid of Al-Islam hosts the first venue of the Kindness Week, Dallas Acts Kind, which
included attendance by Muhammad Ali, Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, III.
• Ex-Offenders Support Group begins the program “Feeding Our Neighbors – Putting ‘Neighbor’ Back in the
‘Hood’” to help feed the wayfarers and the needy
• 2000 – The Masjid organizes a conference entitled Future Global Trends 2000 at the Renaissance Hotel
• 2006 – The Masjid’s Imam pitches the idea of an Islamic Charity Day give away to the wayfarer and the
needy at the Masjid and is generously supported by almost all masajid in DFW
• 2007 – Islamic Charity Day becomes Humanitarian Day
• 2020 – Following the retirement of Imam Khalid Shaheed, Imam Muhammad Abdul-Jami succeeds him as the new imam of Masjid Al-Islam.

Where is the masjid currently located?
The current location of Masjid al-Islam is 2604 S Harwood St, Dallas, TX 75215. The small building is the same one the masjid has been in since 1979.
What programs is the masjid running to serve those in need in South Dallas?
The masjid runs several programs through its Beacon of Light Community center:
Day of Dignity: The masjid runs an annual Day of Dignity event consists of handing out free items like hygiene kits, clothing, and school kits and providing social services/health screenings to those in need in the South Dallas community. It has been recognized by the City of Dallas, and our work has earned numerous awards.
Feeding Our Neighbors – Provides free meals every Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am to 12 noon. We offer a full breakfast on Saturdays at 8:00 am. Our feeding programs are based on a first come, first served basis
Downtown Pantry – Provides non-perishable food to the homeless
Pantry Plus – Provides non-perishable foods to individuals and families with food insecurities that live within the community and its surrounding areas
Clothe Thy Neighbors – Provides clothing, toiletries, baby diapers, etc., every Saturday and Sunday while supplies last.
Financial Assistance to the needy when funds are available. Eligibility requirements apply
Health and Human Services (HHS):
- Community Partners Program – 211 Texas referral program for those requesting human resources for housing, financial assistance, jobs, health and transportation needs, child care, educational training, youth and family, and senior services.
Does Masjid al-Islam have any educational programs?
The masjid runs several educational programs, including:
Sunday School for children/youth called M.E.C.A. (Masjid Al-Islam, Educational Children’s Academy)
Adult and Youth Education Quran learning, Arabic, and the life of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
Weekly Educational Lectures and Halaqas
GED Preparation
Black Muslim Live Matter Series
How will my donation be used?
Your generous donation will be used for our new building construction project.
How much larger will the new masjid be?
The new masjid will be around 18,000 SQFT. and will be able to accommodate more than 1000 prayer spots.
What other features will be part of the new masjid?
The new masjid will include room for offices, classes as well as a gymnasium.
How large will the sisters section be?
Masjid Al-Islam believes in providing ample space for our sisters. Like the original masajids, the prayer space will be undivided with sisters in the back. This will allow maximum flexibility to accommodate sisters and allow them to feel welcome.
